Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge

Moosehorn is one of the northern most national wildlife refuges in the Atlantic Flyway, a migratory route that follows the eastern coast of North America. The refuge provides important feeding and nesting habitat for many bird species, including waterfowl. Wading birds, shorebirds, upland game birds, songbirds, and birds of prey.

Roosevelt Campobello International Park

The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is located on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada just across the international border from Lubec on the easternmost tip of Maine. The focal point of the Park, the Franklin D. Roosevelt summer cottage, and the Park’s Visitor Centre open the last Saturday in May and remain open twenty weeks. The Park grounds and Natural Area are open year round.

Puffin Tours (Machias Seal Island)

If you're a birder or a nature lover, take a half day excursion to Machias Seal Island, summer home to spectacular nesting colonies of Atlantic puffins, Razorbills, Common murres and Arctic terns, among others. For close range puffin observation and photography, no other birding destination can compare, as Machias Seal Island is the largest puffin colony on the coast of Maine!

 

Hunt’s Photo Adventure: The Bold Coast of Maine, Lubec

Tucked into the far northeast corner of Maine is the fishing village of Lubec. Once a thriving fishing community, Lubec is now a quiet coastal town surrounded by the remnants of their fishing legacy and the rugged, sprawling Bold Coast. Lubec features West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, rustic fishing harbors, and nearby Campobello Island as well as many photographic opportunities along the coast. We will spend one day observing and photographing the rare Atlantic Puffin offshore on nearby Machias Seal Island.

This guided interpretive nature tour consists of great scenery, Moose and wildlife watching, infused with local history and lore. The Moosehead Lake region’s backcountry can be a bit overwhelming to the visitor with its vast road network and thousands of acres of undeveloped lands. With a Registered Maine Guide leading the tour you don’t have to worry about which road you’re on or if you should have made that last turn. You can sit back, enjoy the scenery and enjoy your guides company. But stay alert, Maine Moose and other wildlife frequently this area and can present themselves any moment so join in on the search! From scenic mountain vistas to secret moose hangouts this trip has it all.

Experience the feeling of your Canoe or Kayak slicing effortless through waters surface on a remote pond graced by the majestic and historic mountains that form the Appalachian Trail. The Lubec Market

The Lubec Market is “the Easternmost Market in the U.S.A.”  Founded in 2011, the market has more than 15 vendors, offering fresh organic vegetables, seedlings, potted plants, herbs, fresh baked breads, cookies, fused glass bowls and earrings, juried pottery, art, photography, goat cheese, hand-crafted soaps, fresh-picked lettuce, duck and chicken eggs, organic cow’s milk and cheeses, frozen chicken, and more. Come early to enjoy food, camaraderie, and live music from local musicians. The market takes place on Water Street, nearly under the shadow of the [Lubec Narrows?] bridge to Canada.

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

Located on the most eastern point of the continental United States, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is a stunning spot to see the first rays of sun in the country.  Located in Quoddy Head State Park, the original tower was built in 1808 under orders from President Thomas Jefferson.  The  lighthouse  tower that stands today was built in 1858.

 

Festivals & Events in Lubec

Coastal Maine's Washington County and New Brunswick's Charlotte County are host to a variety of annual festivals and events throughout the year.

Passamaquoddy Yacht Club

The Passamaquoddy Yacht Club emerged from the original Campobello Yacht Club, which was established in 1930. One its first members was Franklin Delano Roosevelt who summered on the Island and fully appreciated the art of sailing. The Passamaquoddy Yacht Club officially adopted the Campobello burgee in 1988. The Club has received, with thanks, special permission from the Passamaquoddy tribe to use its name.

Frank Van Riper Walking Photography

Spend a week of hands-on learning and location photography with award-winning husband and wife photographer-authors Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman. Working from their stunning home in west Lubec overlooking Morrison Cove, Frank and Judy will cover basics of portraiture, landscape and documentary photography during morning instruction, followed by assignments in multiple locations including Quoddy Head State Park, Campobello Island, NB and the colorful town of Lubec itself. Daily critiques and one-on-one instruction.

 

Summerkeys Musical Workshops

SummerKeys offers the busy adult an opportunity to be immersed in the study and practice of a musical instrument. The premise is: come as you are and enjoy the study, the work, the camaraderie, and the beauty of the Maine Coast. The program is open to all levels – from beginning students to accomplished players. While both study and practice at SummerKeys are intensive, the atmosphere is relaxed and noncompetitive. You work at your instrument in ways that are rewarding to you.
